Applications & Permits

  • It starts as a new deck idea.
  • When ready to proceed, a contract is signed, project plans are approved, and a down payment is placed so that we can begin preparation work.
  • We handle all of the drafting and preparation of the plans for submission to your local municipality in order to gain any needed permits for the project.
Our Deck Express consultants routinely work with all of our customers from start to finish of a project. They have a great deal of experience in design, materials, and all facets of decision-making involved in planning and completing a successful addition to your home. Since they are working with you and managing the project, you’ll always be in touch with the same person and know that you can trust things to be completed the way you hoped. We feel this is an extremely important and valuable part of why people have such great success working with us and regularly share their experiences with others.
The first step in our process is to gather as much information as possible about your ideas to really get a sense of what you’d like the end result to be. We invite our customers to visit our Project Galleries for ideas. If you’d like to continue the conversation and project planning, we often set a time to visit your home to verify details and gather any additional information necessary to finalize a formal proposal.

We handle all of the drafting and preparation of the plans for submission to your local municipality in order to gain any needed permits for the project. With our experience building new decks in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic and Union Counties, we are very familiar with the local building departments and the proper legal requirements. We also handle scheduling inspections, as well as coordination of other aspects that might pertain to the project. Homeowners simply need to provide us with a plot plan for zoning approval.

During the time that we are working on getting plans approved with the local municipality, we are also taking care of securing materials and having everything ready to start the project. Our goal is to complete the project in as smooth and timely a manner as possible once we start, so we put emphasis on preparation. The general lead time for starting projects is around six weeks, but it depends greatly on the project scope and the amount of work that is currently scheduled as we work on a first-come, first-serve basis. We’re very flexible to work with individual customer needs, however, and our customers are always very pleased with the communication and solutions we provide.
Most projects are completed in 1-2 weeks once under way. Again, this varies with the type of project and overall scope of work, but we’ll be able to discuss this with you in advance. Throughout the process, we’re always available to answer your questions and provide updates on our progress. Our installers are friendly and good communicators, and you’ll always be able to regularly communicate with the project planner you’ve worked with from day one.
